Pet Care Tips for pet owners, keeping healthy cats and dogs

Your pet is more than just an animal, he is a good and faithful friend and companion. He needs care and attention. Here are a few tips to help keep him happy and healthy.

Tips for dogs, Cats tips.

Some of the tips below may help to keep your pet happy and healthy by preventing accidents or a visit to the vet.

It's good advice to use a reputable pet insurance to help with the cost of any treatment in case of your pet having an accident or becoming ill.

Pet owners should never leave an animal unattended in a car. Even with the windows opened, a car can get hot enough to kill a pet in a matter of minutes.

Keep your pet well groomed. Short hair helps your pet stay cool, but don't shave off all of his hair. A pet's coat will protect against the sun.

Pets put on weight for many reasons, not enough exercise, too much of the wrong food, will pile on the pounds rapidly. Pet owners should exercise their pets, in the mornings and evenings to help keep the weight down, you will find that its good for you both.

If you have a problem with cat diarrhoea or dogs diarrhea, but your animal seems as if he or she feels fine and are eating and drinking as normal, you're probably ok to treat the problem at home.
If the symptoms get worse or there is no improvement within 24 hours, seek advice from your vet as your pet could soon become dehydrated.

Everyone knows about worms, its very important to worm cats and dogs regularly the reason for this is that worms carried in cats and dogs are a proven health risk, to your pet, yourself, your family, and also other people and animals. The signs of worms include weight loss, dull coat, low energy level, diarrhoea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pot-belly, coughing. Treating worms is usually by administering worm tablets.

Ear infections symptoms are not comfortable for your pet. Your cat or dog or will show discomfort by scratching his ears and shaking his head. If this becomes persistent, then it is important to have your pet examined by your vet, as ear infections in dogs have many causes.

Watch for heatstroke symptoms in your cat or dog: panting (or suddenly not panting), salivating, vomiting, reddened gums and tongue, anxiety, weakness, racing heartbeat, and collapse.

Dogs Advice

Take care to prevent your dog from hanging his head out of a moving car window, flies, insects, grit and stones can injure your dogs eyes and he is also at risk of trying to jump out of the window.

It is easy to do dog training in your home, but its not a one way process to train your dog to behave, both the trainer and the dog play an important part in the training process. Everyone benefits from dog training whether you just got a puppy, a rescued dog or an already established older dog. Dog behaviour training will deepen the bond you have with your dog, and will make him far better behaved, calmer and more easily controlled. You and your dog will be far more relaxed, and so will your family and friends when they come to visit.

When taking your dog to the beach, take care to provide a shaded area and plenty of fresh drinking water.

Immediately move any pet with heatstroke symptoms to a cooler spot, and slowly reduce the animal's temperature by placing its body (not head) in cool water wrapping the pet in cool, wet towels. Then take it to a vet, for any more advice of any other care that is needed.

In summer, exercise your dog and play with cats early or later in the day, when it's cooler.

Dogs, like their owners, occasionally awake with 'sleep' in the corner of their eyes, a small bead of discharge which is the result of the eye's natural cleaning ability. It is perfectly normal for all dogs to get this now and again. Some large eyed dogs similar to Pekingese or pugs are more likely to get it than some other breeds. If you find sleep in your dogs eyes, to remove any discharge, gently wipe their eyes with damp cotton wool or tissue, its fine to use tap water. If there is no major sign of discharge throughout the day, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

It's good advice, to not overfeed your dog or cat. Obesity will create health problems and shorten their life.

Kennel cough appears in kennel cough dogs have been mixing with other dogs at places such as grooming parlours, training clubs, boarding kennels, field trials or even in your local dog walking area where dogs tend to meet. It is transmitted through the air. kennel cough symptoms are an irritating little dry cough. Kennel cough treatment, it can be prevented, by vaccination. Kennel Cough sounds much worse than really is. Usually, the signs clear up within seven to 14 days, treated or not.

Travel sickness dogs, some dogs constantly get sick when travelling in a car. The symptoms include drooling, shivering and vomiting. It usually helps to withhold food and water for a few hours before the journey.

Take care to give your pet adequate exercise.

Care for your pets dental health. Have teeth cleaned professionally whenever your vet advises it.

Make your pet as much a part of your life as possible, and do all you can to keep him interested, active, happy and comfortable.

By taking care of some basic precautions and paying attention to the needs of their pets, owners can help their cats and dogs make it through the winter in good health.

It's good to care for your pet by giving more food during cold weather than you do during hot summer months.

Don't neglect pet grooming in the winter. While a regular bath is unwise, brushing and even "dry" bathing will keep your pet's coat clean and healthy, and reduce odour.

If your dog is kept outdoors, the advice for the dogs owners is to be sure your dog always has a fresh supply of water, in winter check frequently to be sure the dogs water hasn't frozen.

Cats tips

Cats love sun-bathing but take care, as many are at risk of sun damage, particularly white and pale-coloured cats and those with sparse hair on their ears.

Most cats will find themselves a nice shady spot when the going gets hot, but the best advice is to keep an eye on elderly cats, as they can suffer from heat stroke.

Cats do not always want to eat a lot during hot weather, but, if puss seems persistently off his food, the best advice is to have him checked by your vet.

At holiday times, cats are best left at home in the care of a pet sitter or reliable friend or family member. Try to arrange that the carer visits the home twice a day to feed and water him, and provide some fuss and play.

When it comes to eating or drinking water, cats are extremely fussy creatures. Cat feeding bowls that you serve her food and drink in must be wide enough to not catch her whiskers, as cats find this unpleasant, they may pull food out of a bowl that is too narrow, and eat it at the side of the bowl, or cats may stay away from their bowl if it does not suit her.

Cats fur balls are big clumps of hair that build up in your cat’s gut which can become large enough to cause coughing and vomiting, in an attempt to bring the Cats fur balls up. Help to prevent this with regular brushing to remove excess fur that your cat might otherwise swallow while grooming.

Does my cat have the fleas? Flea symptoms are most commonly noticed in warm weather (spring and summer) but with modern central heating they can be a year round problem. Some cats do become irritable and scratch, others show no apparent signs of discomfort.Try to find treatments with insect growth regulators (IGRs), which disrupt the flea's life cycle.
Without IGRs, the flea eggs hatch every three weeks, which makes repeat treatments necessary.

Here are a few general tips, for photographing pets.

Sit or lay on the ground to take photos on their level, put smaller pets on a table or chair.

Take the picture as close as possible, be careful not to blur the image.

Try to take the photos outdoors in good natural light.

Usually, the best view of your pet is a three-quarter profile.

Take photos from many different angles and different poses, this will also help to prevent "red eye" if you have to use a flash.

Photographs of pets, both past and present would make an excellent DVD slideshow to save all your treasured memories.
